日本に来たきっかけは？
I came here after visiting Australia where I meet my wife to be.
あなたの若い頃日本で暮らすことを希望していたり予感していたりしていましたか？
No. I never imagined when I was young that I would end up here. I liked watching A.Kurosawa movies though.
若い頃にもし外国で暮らすとしたらどこに旅行したり暮らしたりしたいと思っていましたか？
I wanted to go and perhaps live in Switzerland because I like mountains.
Japan has lots of them so its good.
例えば日本の小学生向けの教科書を使う人もいるようですが、日本語はどのように覚えましたか？
By living among the people here interacting in every day life activities.
70年代に比べれば大人向けの日本語の教科書の出版点数は増えているんでしょうか？
Yes. Because Japan is more open to foreigners nowadays and an increasing globalization as well as the younger generation is more open minded and don't dwell about the past.
日本語を学ぶ上で自分で発見したり、工夫したことはありますか？
Think in the local language, talk to yourself in Japanese, listen to people around you and watch movies or YouTube.
今までの教えた生徒の中でもっとも小さい子供は何歳くらいでしたか？
Probably 9 months old.
今までの教えた生徒の中でもっとも英会話習熟度の高かった生徒はどんな方でしたか？
An open minded person who didn't see English as difficult and who always worked hard to learn it with no deadline in mind.
Learning at ones own pace and enjoy it.
生徒の年齢によって教え方の哲学が変わるとしたらどんなことですか？
Be concerned about the students present knowledge, past experience, future goals and ones own interest.
例えば日本の高校の授業や大学受験で使われる英語の設問は時として英語圏の実情にあっていないということがよく指摘されるのですが、それらを見聞きしたことはありますか？
Yes. Spoken English And written test English is different. Tests are focused on too much grammar and memorizing words. Conversational English is idiom based with current jargon.
例えば私達のクラスでは昔、東京スカイツリーという名前はそれが灰色の建物なので樹木という言葉のイメージでは無いと教わりました。

日本語では人それぞれの生きる上でのスローガンを座右の銘と言います。何か日本人に紹介したい好きな英単語やことわざはありますか？
Don't wait to do something tomorrow when you can do it today.

JR山手線の好きな駅と理由を教えて下さい。
I like Shimbashi because of its old Showa Era styled buildings, shops and history.
そういえば、JR山手線に50年ぶりに新しい駅が誕生します。駅名は「高輪ゲートウェイ」と決められたのですが、批判も多く変更の署名活動も存在します。駅名の語感をネイティブスピーカーとしてはどう感じますか？ゲートウェイという言葉には羽田空港と外国へのゲートという意味が込められているのですが。
A bit too strong name for a local train station. Takanawa Station is easier.
若い頃の日本の印象と来日後の日本に対する感想との間でギャップは何かありますか？
Of course. Movies either portrait Japan as being glorified or unfriendly. Hardly reflect modern regular life.
日本のトイレットペーパーはシングルとダブルの違い、匂い付きと匂い無しの違い、有名ブランドと無名ブランドの違いがあるのですが、先生の好みを教えて下さい。くだらない質問ですが、一見くだらない質問ほど意味の広がりがあると考えます。
I prefer simple, convenient, reasonable priced merchandise.
最後に.インタビュアーの私の英語力もまだまだ酷いレベルであることは自覚しています。
